چکیده

This paper introduces the method of dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) for robustly separating video frames into background (low-rank) and foreground (sparse) components in real-time. The method is a novel application of a technique used for characterizing nonlinear dynamical systems in an equation-free manner by decomposing the state of the system into low-rank terms whose Fourier components in time are known. DMD terms with Fourier frequencies near the origin (zero-modes) are interpreted as background (low-rank) portions of the given video frames, and the terms with Fourier frequencies bounded away from the origin are their sparse counterparts. An approximate low-rank/sparse separation is achieved at the computational cost of just one singular value decomposition and one linear equation solve, thus producing results orders of magnitude faster than a leading separation method, namely robust principal component analysis (RPCA). The DMD method that is developed here is demonstrated to work robustly in real-time with personal laptop-class computing power and without any parameter tuning, which is a transformative improvement in performance that is ideal for video surveillance and recognition applications.

Multi-Resolution Analysis of Dynamical Systems using Dynamic Mode Decomposition

We introduce the method of dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) for robustly separating complex systems into a hierarchy of multi-resolution time-scaled components. The method includes a methodology for background (low-rank) and foreground (sparse) separation of dynamical data. The method involves a technique used for characterizing nonlinear dynamical systems in an equation-free manner by decompos...

A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO REAL-TIME DYNAMIC BACKGROUND GENERATION BASED ON A TEMPORAL MEDIAN FILTER

In many computer vision applications, segmenting and extraction of moving objects in video sequences is an essential task. Background subtraction, by which each input image is subtracted from the reference image, has often been used for this purpose. In this paper, we offer a novel background-subtraction technique for real-time dynamic background generation using color images that are taken fro...

Approximated Robust Principal Component Analysis for Improved General Scene Background Subtraction

The research reported in this paper addresses the fundamental task of separation of locally moving or deforming image areas from a static or globally moving background. It builds on the latest developments in the field of robust principal component analysis, specifically, the recently reported practical solutions for the long-standing problem of recovering the low-rank and sparse parts of a lar...

OR-PCA with MRF for Robust Foreground Detection in Highly Dynamic Backgrounds

Accurate and efficient foreground detection is an important task in video surveillance system. The task becomes more critical when the background scene shows more variations, such as water surface, waving trees, varying illumination conditions, etc. Recently, Robust Principal Components Analysis (RPCA) shows a very nice framework for moving object detection. The background sequence is modeled b...

Markovian Framework for Foreground-Background-Shadow Separation of Real World Video Scenes

In this paper we give a new model for foreground-background-shadow separation. Our method extracts the faithful silhouettes of foreground objects even if they have partly background like colors and shadows are observable on the image. It does not need any a priori information about the shapes of the objects, it assumes only they are not point-wise. The method exploits temporal statistics to cha...
